Ideas for Teachers to use in their Classroom - Right NOW!
By Flip Jones, Teacher in South Carolina

  • Project in everything you do or say that you will not accept any form of bullying in your presence, in your room, anywhere in the school or on school grounds, or on school trips.  (Simply, but emphatically, stating your policy is a great beginning.)
  • Put up “bully-free Classroom” poster(s) in your room.
  • Post the “800” number to call in case of bullying.  Express that the person being bullied or seeing bullying going on, (or, even a bully  who realizes what he/she is doing is wrong and wants to stop), should tell  a teacher, guidance counselor or other adult in the school.
  • Make business cards with the above information available in your room and throughout the school (announce where they will be available).
  • Give the “bully” test.  Grade and critique it and demonstrate by role-playing what is bullying and what is not (where do you draw the line).  Sexual harassment should be covered at this time as well.
  • Teach kids what to do when they have been, or are being bullied.  Teach them how to react properly, without getting into trouble.
  • Teach kids what to do when someone around them is being bullied.
  • Show them what harm bullying can do (columbine, “bullycide”, etc.)
  • Share with students some of the reasons that a bully may choose to be a bully and what can be done to help the bully stop his bullying, (counseling, family counseling, anger management, etc.).
  • Discuss ways to help someone who has been bullied, (being their friend, accepting differences, etc.)
  • Work on ways to train other teachers and adults (including parents) to do what must be done to stop bullies.
Flip Jones is a Science Teacher from South Carolina.  The above suggestions are tried and tested techniques that have worked for him.

If you are a teacher have more ideas that can be added to this page, please email Flip at plummerj@charter.net
